What’s New in Grade 2 and 3?

January 15, 2018

Language Arts
This week we will be reading The Hockey Song by Stompin’ Tom Connors. Our weekly words are:

hockey, players, fans, puck, stick, ice, game, skates, line, slide

Due to the Snow Days last week, we will begin our writing about our favourite toy on Wednesday this week. Send in a picture or name of your favourite toy for Wednesday so we can brainstorm ideas for writing.

Mathematics
We will be working on double digit addition and subtraction strategies for the next few weeks.

Science
Students will be presenting their Science Experiment homework (from December 10th) this week. Their posters will be entered into the North Bay Regional Science Fair this April. Students can receive as much help from parents as they want for their poster. For their mark, students will be graded on their oral presentation. If you lost the assignment, please see your child’s Google Classroom (passwords on front cover of the agenda).

Don’t forget to sign the permission form for the Madagascar play! Forms are due this Friday.

What’s New in Grade 2?

Happy New Year! Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

Language Arts
This week we will be reading and writing about toys. Our Shared Reading selection is The Marvelous Toy. Our weekly words are: little, very, away, about, mother, after, too, now, don’t, asked. Don’t forget to review our “No Excuses Words” list that was sent home and can be found on our websites. We will have a review test next week.

For Writing, we will be writing a descriptive writing piece about our favourite toy. If your child selects a non-breakable toy, they can bring it in on Thursday (not before as there will be a supply teacher for parts of the week). If their favourite toy is expensive or breakable, please send in a photo or the correct name so I can find a photo of it on the Internet.

Mathematics
We will be reviewing place value, addition and subtraction strategies, and double digit addition without regrouping.

Religion
We will read the Sunday Liturgy for this past weekend, learn about John Baptist and the Holy Family.

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3?

December 11, 2017

This will be the last newsletter until January. Please remember these dates:

Wednesday, December 13th- 1 pm Christmas Concert in the Gym (Please dress your child in red, green or white top with black or blue pants)

Wednesday, December 20th- 9:30 am Mass at the church

Thursday, December 21st- 1-2 Gingerbread House Making (students will be taking home their own little gingerbread house)

Friday, December 22nd Red and Green Day

Language Arts
For the next two weeks, we will continue to read gingerbread stories. Our Shared Readings will be The Gingerbread Man Poem and The Nativity Poem. Each student will have a verse to read. Please see their agenda for their verse to practise reading each evening. If time permits, we hope to make a digital text using these poems.

Weekly Words: here, there, where, who, what, when, why, could, would, should

 There will be NO weekly words next week. We will have a weekly words test the second week back in January. So if bored during the holidays, students can practise reading and spelling the Grade 2 No Excuses Words. Don’t forget to use Hearbuilder apps every day at home! (see Classwork for list of No Excuses Words or the paper copy of the newsletter)

Mathematics
We hope to complete our unit about measuring over the next two weeks. Please keep practising one-digit addition and subtraction facts. There will also be an assessment in January. Students can use Splash Math and Prodigy during the holidays to keep up their skills.

If I haven’t heard from you about booking a Parent-Teacher interview, I will try to reach you by phone this week. Don’t forget to send in recycled materials to make a raft for the poor Gingerbread Man!

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3?

December 4, 2017

Many thanks to you for your kind notes and sympathy cards. It’s been a tough go, but I know my mother is at peace now.

Please let me know when you would like to meet with me for a parent-teacher interview. I am available after school from 3:15 to 4:15 or at 7:30 a.m. on December 6th and 7th, 12thand 14th. Let me know in the agenda what time is good for you. I will give you a telephone call to confirm the date and time with you. We can also do a telephone interview if that is easier for you.

Language Arts
We will be reading a series of books about the Gingerbread Man. We will be comparing and contrasting the books as a reading comprehension activity.

Our weekly words are Gingerbread Man Positional Words:above, top, behind, front, under, beneath, next, beside, left, right, of.

Each morning students will search the classroom for our Gingerbread Man and write a sentence about where he was found! Mathematics
We will be starting a new unit on linear measurement this week. We will continue to practise using different mental addition strategies for one-digit numbers.

Science
We will be working on several experiments over the next two weeks. If possible, please send in recycled materials to create a little boat or raft for the gingerbread man.  Items such as small empty cardboard boxes, straws, tape, and string have been useful in the past.

Christmas Festivities
Please see the school newsletter sent home last week for important dates such as Christmas with the Dragons Dec. 5 5:30-7pm, Christmas Concert Dec. 13th 1pm in the school gym, Red and Green Day December 22nd and Christmas Mass December 20th 9:30 at the church.

We are planning a special afternoon in our class to celebrate Christmas. Each student will be decorating their own little gingerbread house on December 21st from 1 to 2pm. Students are allowed to invite one parent or grandparent to celebrate with us.  The gingerbread house is a gift from the teacher to the student. Students will construct, decorate and wrap the house to take home at the end of the day.

For this activity, you can provide some peanut-free candy decorations for the gingerbread house (such as Smarties, licorice, gumdrops, gum)

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3?

Language Arts
This week we will be reading the book A Letter to Santa and writing our own letters to him!

Our weekly words are: get, sent, letter, write, like, hope, make, Christmas, Santa, have.

We will be discussing the magic-e or silent-e pattern in words.

Mathematics
This week we are continuing our discussion and review of one-digit addition strategies.

Religion
This is the big week for our Class Mass! Father Rex will be coming to our school to say the Compassion Mass. Our class is in charge of the music, readings, and decorations. You are welcome to attend. Mass will be at 9:15 on Wednesday in the gym. If possible, please wear pink. If your child is doing a reading (the Purple Reading Group) please make sure that they have been rehearsing! Students have been working hard to learn the lyrics for the songs and creating videos with me. They have worked SO hard! I am proud of them! Please sign permission for Thursday afternoon- cake celebration! We will be making a cake to celebrate our hard work.

Parent-Teacher interviews are this week. Please watch for the report card with the interview times in Wednesday’s agenda front pouch!

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3?

Language Arts
This week we will be reading a poem about the virtue of Compassion. Our class will be presenting the Compassion Mass on November 22nd at 9:15 in the school gym. We will be practising our songs and readings throughout the week. Please check your child’s agenda to see if they have any readings to rehearse.

Our weekly words are: with, what, are, we, when, there, help, then, that, all.

Some students have an “I Can Read” homework booklet. Please read and reread these pages with your child frequently to help develop their reading skills.

Mathematics
This week we will begin our addition strategies discussions. Please work on the Math Booklet sent home in September to help develop student fluency with addition and subtraction facts. If you have misplaced your copy, sorry I no longer have any additional copies. Students can now sign into their Prodigy Math Game at home. Please see their login information sent home last week or the sticker on the front page of their agenda.

Religion
We will be working on preparing our readings and songs throughout the week. If possible, please dress your child in pink for November 22nd. Congratulations to Emily and Skye for making their First Reconciliation. We will be reading scripture from the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3?

November 7, 2017

This week we have three separate events: Treaty Recognition Week, Remembrance Day and a special day about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Two of our students will be receiving their First Confession on Wednesday. Congratulations! You have courage and we will pray for you this week!

Language Arts
Our Shared Reading will be Hug O’War and Poppy. Our weekly words are: will, where, hug, wins, and, play, I, I’d, are, little.

Mathematics
This Friday we will have a test about skip counting. Please continue to practise skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s to 200 with your child. Also practise starting at different points on the hundreds chart. Example: starting at 2, skip count by 5s to 30.

Students will be receiving access to Prodigy (a Math app) this week. There are some skip counting activities and other skills to practise on Prodigy. Don’t forget to use Raz Kids!! Children can earn prizes from Mrs. Larmer for consistently using Raz Kids.

We have also been approved for another important app that will be available later this month! Please try to use these apps daily or at least twice a week as they will not be renewed if families are not using them.

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3 This Week?

October 30, 2017

Thank you very much for attending our Halloween Night Play and Dance! I’m sure you can tell that the students worked very hard to learn their lines, decorate the room and cooperate to have a lot of fun!

Language Arts
This week we will be reading several poems and books about bats. We will be learning the difference between a fact and an opinion.

Our weekly words are: here, where, there (notice: all end in –ere and are all adverbs of place), some, come (notice: they rhyme and have the same ending), came (past tense of come), go, went (past tense of go), why and when.

Mathematics
This week we will be concluding our skip counting unit. Students will learn to skip count by 25s using quarters and a 200s chart. We will also carry out a small survey and make a bar graph.

Religion
Don’t forget to send in the names of any relatives or friends who have past away. We can add them to our prayer jar for the month of November. We will be learning about the sacraments of the Catholic Church. If you have any pictures of your child’s baptism, please send them in or put them into your student’s Google Drive. We will be having a special day next week to learn about the Sacrament of Reconciliation and celebrate with two of our students who will be doing their First Confession. We will be reading the scripture for the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Science
We will continue to learn about the different states and properties of matter. Students will learn to read a thermometer and connect the temperature of zero degrees Celsius with the freezing of water.

Social Studies
We will discuss the traditions of Halloween, All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day and Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos).

Homework:

  1. Weekly Words
  2. Practice counting by 25s (quarters), by 2s, 5s, and 10s to 200.
  3. Share with us any photos or stories about your child’s baptism (who are their godparents, special gifts, etc.)
  4. Keep reading every day.

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3 This Week?

October 23, 2017

Language Arts
This week we will continue reading our play script. Our weekly words for this week are the 5Wh words or question words:
who, what, where, when, why.

We will be working on word families and rhyming patterns. In Creative Writing, we will be writing instructions for carving a Jack O’Lantern.

Mathematics
This week we will continue our skip counting and discussions of number patterns.

Science
Students will continue to explore the states of matter. We hope to begin a few experiments this week or next week to explore matter. We will use our knowledge of procedural writing to read and write experiments.

Religion
We will be reading the Children's Liturgy for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time and practising our pumpkin prayer. Please put the names of any deceased relatives and friends in the agenda so we can add them to our Book of Remembrance for the Catholic Tradition of All Saints and All Souls Day during the month of November.

Halloween Play and Dance
This Friday, October 27th from 1:00 to 1:30 pm we will be presenting our short Halloween Play and Dance. A copy of your child’s lines to practise will be in their agendas. If you are able to attend, the play will be in our classroom. Seating will begin at 12:50. Students will serve pumpkin muffins after the play. Students will receive a treat bag to take home after the play. They are asked to have their parents check these treats before consuming them (just like on the real Halloween night!).

What’s New This Week in Grade 2/3?

Language Arts
This week we will be reading Halloween Night as our Shared Reading. This text is a script for a play that we hope to present to you on Friday, October 27th, 2017 at 1:00 pm.

Our weekly words for this week are: had, or, of, say, bats, ghosts, skeletons, monsters, trick, Halloween.

We will have a review spelling test for all of the weekly words from September to now.  Please continually review the short vowel sounds with your child as several students continue to have difficulty with these sounds. The mnemonic we are using is at, edge, in, on and under. Each word starts with a short vowel sound. See the Vowel Mouse pictures sent home or under Classwork on this website.

In Creative Writing, we will be writing a descriptive paragraph and learning about procedural writing.

Mathematics
For the next few weeks, we will be learning about number patterns using the hundreds chart and we will be reviewing skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s.

Science
We will continue to learn about the pumpkin plant and about the states of matter.

Social Studies
We will be learning about the tradition of Halloween for the next few weeks. Thank you for helping your child complete the Three Generations of Halloween sheet sent home last week as homework.

Homework:
Practise spelling your review words for this Friday’s test.

If I did not reach you by phone last week to review your child’s progress to date, I will call this week.

What’s New in Grade 2 and 3 This Week?

I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving!

This week I will be trying to contact you by phone during the day or in the evening to review your child’s progress so far this year. Please check your child’s login information for Google Classroom before I call (information is in the agenda on the week of September 25th). If you have trouble logging in, please let me know when I call.

Language Arts
This week we will be reading A Monster Wrote Me a Letter by Nick Bland. Our weekly words are:

said, if, at, go, like, so, what, who and, too.

Next week we will have a review test of all the words we have studied so far this year. Please continue to review the short vowel sounds with your child (many students cannot produce the correct sounds. Use the mnemonic provided.)

In our Creative Writing Workshop, we will be brainstorming ideas about a monster who is leaving pawprints in the schoolyard sandbox.

Science
This week will be learning the parts of the pumpkin plant. We will scientifically dissect a pumpkin on Friday afternoon. As Friday morning is Picture Day, please send in an old t-shirt or bib to protect students’ clothing from pumpkin juice.

Religion
We will be learning about our Guardian Angel, the Pumpkin Prayer, and reading Scripture for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Mathematics
Please continue to review the days of the week and months of the year with your child. We will have a short test at the end of this week or early next week about comparing numbers and reading a calendar.

Social Studies
This week we will begin to discuss the tradition of Halloween. Please help your child complete the community activity: Three Generations of Halloween. We will share our stories on Friday.

What’s New This Week in Grade 2/3?

Language Arts
For our Shared Reading, we will be reading Giving Thanks by Chief Jake Swamp. We will be reading several books about Thanksgiving and learning about Fall traditions and the Thanksgiving holiday.

Our weekly words are: we, are, us, with, will, sun, God, fall, pie, thanks. 

Mathematics
We will be reviewing how to read a calendar and exploring the patterns that can be found in the calendar. 

Religion
We will be reading the Sunday Liturgy for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, attending Mass on Wednesday, and learning about the Feast Day of our Guardian Angel.

What’s New in Grade 2/3 This Week?

September 25, 2017

**Please see agenda for the Google School username and password. All students have access to our Google Classroom**

Please also see the agenda for permission required. As a celebration of our hard work and the September Catholic Virtue of Respect, students will be given a small treat to take home on Friday (with your permission only).

Language Arts
This week we will be reading Helper Animals for our Shared Reading. Our weekly words are: can, cat, dog, pet, it, but, have, animals, people, person. I will let you know in your child’s agenda if they have a reduced workload. For students who need an extra challenge, they can write a sentence for each weekly word, put their words in alphabetical order, and find rhyming words for their words.

We will continue to learn how to write a complete sentence over the next few weeks.

Last week, students enjoyed learning how to brainstorm ideas for creative writing. Thank you for your assistance. Students have begun to type up their published story using Google Docs. They can enter a digital picture of their pet into their writing or you can email it to me.

Mathematics

This week we will continue reviewing Grade One numeration concepts. The students are having difficulty with remembering the days of the week and the months. I am placing a “Racing through the Months” game you can play with your child. We will review the teen numbers and their number words. If your child needs a challenge, they can practise reading and spelling the number words to 19 (zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen).

Reminders

Please make sure that you use Cash Online for all purchases such as pizza. Cash will no longer be excepted.

For students who were unable to attend the Open House, a homework package was provided with extra work (only if you want to do it) and a Reading Log. Please record your child’s daily home reading in the log. Send it in once a month so I can tally up numbers. A trophy will be awarded to the student who reads the most books at home this year!

What’s New in Grade 2/3 This Week?

September 18, 2017

OPEN HOUSE!
We will be having an Open House on Wednesday, September 20th from 6:00 to 7:30. In the Grade 2/3 Classroom at 6:30 pm, I will be showing a video and reviewing with parents how to use our website and discussing our rules, routines and homework.  Hope to see you in our classroom at 6:30 pm. Thanks!

Language Arts
For our Shared Reading this week, we will read a poem about Pets. Our weekly words to spell and read are: you, me, my, for, the, to. Students are encouraged to practise writing sentences using these words. As determined from our initial assessments, the focus this term will be on writing sentences, print conventions and spelling. Remember, if your child has an IEP, we will be either enriching or diminishing homework according to the IEP and your direction.

On Thursday, students will write a short paragraph about a pet. The focus of our first Writers’ Workshop is brainstorming ideas. Please help your child to think about describing words and to sort their ideas using the 5Whs (who, what, where, when, why) on the brainstorming graphic organizer provided (see agenda front pouch or website). You may send in a photograph for your child to use as part of their published writing.

Mathematics
Last week we reviewed numbers and concepts such as more, fewer and equal. Students were introduced to the greater than, less than, and equal symbols. For homework, please complete the worksheet provided and return by Friday.

This week our focus will be on learning to read and print number words (one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten).

Each week I will summarize what we have planned for the week and list homework for the week.

REMINDER:
Please complete all forms sent home last week: Registration, Medical, and Interest Survey.

Please purchase an agenda for daily communication. They cost $10 and may be purchased through Cash On-Line.

Languages Arts
This week we will be reading New Shoes for School as our Shared Reading selection. We will continue to review Grade One content. This week I hope to begin individual literacy assessments.

Our weekly words for this week are:

at, edge, in, on, under. Students should be able to read and spell them for Friday.

Mathematics
We will be reviewing one-to-one correspondence and quantity. There will be no Math homework until content lessons begin.

Please review the supply list and send in any of the materials requested when you can.
